Shows for Little girls. Shows with strong female leads.
As a parent I believe it is important to teach little girls that they can be their own heroes. For many years female roles in movies and Shows were always as the sidekick and supporting roles or their character was stereotypical weak female.
Em is at an age now where she has started to watch some television shows. I am pleasantly surprised by the variety of shows available for her age group on ShowMax and Netflix. We choose to use streaming services as we can set Parental guidance on devices, so no pre-authorised shows can be watched.
Below is a list of series that have strong female characters. I like each show for different reasons.
Princess Sofia
Sofia was born a normal village girl until her mother marries the King. Sofia then becomes a Princess, where she must navigate being a princess. Her Step-Father gifts a beautiful amulet. Unbeknownst to everyone this amulet holds magical powers which allow Sofia to speak to animals and other powers. Sofia is the protagonist in this Disney series. I enjoy the songs and that Sofia is her own hero.
Paw Patrol – Skye and Everest
I’m sure every parent knows about Paw Patrol, you probably already have the theme song stuck in your head.
Skye is part of the main Paw Patrol Pack, she may be a small Cockapoo but she is big in heart and Spirit. Skye saves lives and the day with her Helicopter. Em now loves helicopters and airplanes and wants to be a pilot like Skye.
Everest is a Huskey which rides a Snow Mobile. She is tough and used to living in freezing conditions. Both Everest and Skye are very capable members of The Paw Patrol.
Nella the Princess Knight
Nella is a Princess but doesn’t spend all day in pretty dresses, she is also a Knight.
Nella isn’t waiting for anyone to come and save her, she is the first to respond to emergencies in her Kingdom and always up for an adventure. She goes on missions with Trinket, Sir Garrett, and Clod. Together they go on quests, solve mysteries, and learn valuable lessons.
Spirit -Riding free
The series is based off the Movie , Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron
Lucky arrives in the town of Miradero, a city girl and struggles to fit in at school but befriends a wild stallion. The stallion and Lucky have an instant connection.
Lucky also meets two other girls, Pru Granger and Abigail Stone, who both own horses, Chica Linda, and Boomerang. Wild adventures soon commence.
Doc McStuffins
is an animated children's television series about a girl Dottie “Doc McStuffins ,who can "fix" toys, with help from her toy friends.
She wants to become a Paediatrician like her mother and practices her dream by fixing toys and dolls.
Doc has a magician stethoscope. The magical stethoscope which brings toys to life. With help from her stuffed friends – Stuffy the Dragon, Hallie the Hippo, Lambie the Lamb, and Chilly the Snowman – Doc helps toys recover, or "feel better", by giving them check-ups and diagnosing their fictional illnesses.
I love this show! I’m sure it will inspire many children to become doctors. The life lessons that are added to each episode. One lesson is about not running by the pool as you could slip and hurt yourself another was about brushing your teeth and going to the dentist. Its an incredibly sweet show.
I purposefully seek out shows for my daughter watch that have strong female leads or have life lessons built into the script.
I strongly advocate for parental guidance when children any shows or movies. Always ensure that you know what your children are watching. Monitor screen time and ensure that you have parental guidance filters enabled all devices in your home.
