Review: Yonder Hill – Mommys Wine Morning
Updated: Feb 19, 2019
Recently I was invited to a #MommysWineMorning by Jean Olivier from www.mommyexplores.com
This group of wonderful ladies descended on Yonder Hill, just outside Stellenbosch on the R44.
From the moment I drove up their driveway I was transported to a place where time was of no consequence. Situated on lower slopes of the Helderberg on a 13-hectare working vineyard, the Yonder Hill farm has a tranquil presence.
We were met with a welcome drink of their Danilo Rose 2018. Simply described as Summer in a bottle.
Their Wine Maker, Abe Beukes introduced us to the History of the farm and their wine making philosophy. Abe then took us through a vertical wine tasting of the wines on offer at Yonder Hill. It was fascinating to be able to taste the difference in the vintages. Yonder Hill predominantly produces red wine, with their Flag Ship being the Nicola.
The Nicola is a dry red blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The blend is wood matured in French oaks for 18 months, leaving you with a complex but elegant wine. Not surprisingly this was my favourite wine of the day.
Don’t forget to have a peek at their Ankole Cows, an ingenious breed of cattle from Northern Africa. This breed was made famous when our President Cyril Ramaphosa imported the breed.
Yonder Hill will definitely be seeing me again. Grab a bunch of friends and go chill at their tasting venue with a glass of vino.
Good to know:
Wine tasting is R60/pp which includes 1 pre-drink, 5 wines and Olyfberg Olive products.
You can also buy wine by the glass.
