Restaurant Review: Die Damhuis Restaurant – a celebration of the West Coast.
Updated: Aug 12, 2021
Die Damhuis Restaurant is a family-friendly restaurant situated just off Beach Road in Melkbosstrand.
Popular with the locals and visitors alike Die Damhuis is bustling with activity from breakfast service to dinner. This restaurant is family-friendly with a wonderful kiddie’s area with a Lighthouse with a slide, sand kitchen and boat for the kids to play. The big selling point is the kiddie’s section is covered so you are protected from the hot summer sun and winter rains, making Die Damhuis a great option all year round.
Die Damhuis is a favourite restaurant for my family and has become our go-to restaurant.
Menu:
Don’t let the family-friendly label make you think this is a subpar dining experience. The menu is focused on Seafood but serves up all the traditional favourites. Seafood casseroles, Fish and Chips, Babotie, Pot pies and fresh salads – there is something for everyone on the menu. No matter the weather there is a perfect dish waiting for you.
There are many vegetarian options and they do cater for gluten allergies, you just have to ask the waiter and they can advise.
The menu is vast and has new jumping from dish to dish. Portions are very generous at Die Damhuis.
My favourite is going to Die Damhuis for breakfast after a walk on the Melkbos beach. My husband always goes for the Cold Breakfast and I love their Vegetarian Breakfast.
The kiddie’s menu has all the usual suspects that children would enjoy (Chicken Nuggets, Fried Hake, Pasta and a Burger. The kiddie’s meals are served with a little umbrella, the kids loved this! Portions are incredibly generous.
Drinks/ Wine Menu:
The wine list is extensive offering wine in all price ranges and for all tastes. They even have an Exclusive wine list which offers more exclusive and harder to find wines for the wine connoisseur. Ask your knowledgeable Staff for their suggestions. The bar is fully stocked and serve delicious cocktails, rich creamy milkshakes along with a large selection of hardtack and craft beers on tap.
Décor and Ambience:
I love the quirky décor of the Die Damhuis. The restaurant is decorated to look like a beachside cottage. They have fun statues and artwork around the restaurant which adds to the charm of the establishment. The kids play area has a little lighthouse and boat for the kids to play in, while parents enjoy a meal. The fisherman's tent is perfect for cold Winters days, while the outside patio and the kiddies area are perfect for summer days.
The Damhuis building is one of the oldest buildings in the Western Cape with views of Robben Island
Service:
The service is efficient and friendly. All the staff are well trained and knowledgeable about the menu and wine list. The kid’s food came rather quickly as they know that kids don’t like waiting for their food.
Dog friendly:
Die Damhuis is dog friendly. They allow well behaved canine friends at the restaurant. The restaurant has a menu with some yummy food for dogs.
Overall Impression:
We have always had wonderful meals at Die Damhuis. Service is friendly, attentive but not intrusive. The kids have a blast playing in the kiddie’s area. Perfect restaurant for fresh delicious meals.
The restaurant is very popular, so it is advisable to make a reservation.
Covid precautions are in place. No mask – no entry. Sanitize hands before entering and temperatures are taken. All staff wear masks and adhere to Covid regulations.
